Calling Ontario’s Registered Dietitians: Ontario Dietitians is a community built by dietitians, for dietitians – Build it with us from the ground up.
Gut and digestive issues affect millions of Canadians, significantly impacting both physical and mental well-being.
When your gut isn’t functioning properly, it could cause additional health problems and affect your day-to-day life. You may be experiencing bloating, abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, heartburn, nausea, indigestion, or the presence of blood and mucus in the stool.
If these symptoms are affecting your quality of life, you don’t have to suffer in silence.
Some digestive and gut health issues we support with:
Absolutely. Many people think they’re not constipated because they have daily bowel movements, but constipation isn’t just about frequency.
Our ON Dietitians explain that you can still be constipated if you’re straining, passing hard stools, or feeling like you haven’t completely emptied your bowels. Addressing these underlying constipation issues is often the key to reducing bloating and abdominal discomfort – and it’s usually much simpler than people think
While low-FODMAP diets can be helpful for some people, our dietitians often see clients who jump to this restrictive approach without addressing the basics first. Simple constipation relief strategies—like adequate fiber, proper hydration, and regular eating patterns—can resolve many digestive symptoms without the need for food restrictions. We help you start with the fundamentals before considering more complex interventions.
Digestive issues are incredibly common, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with discomfort. Changes in bowel habits, persistent pain, or symptoms that interfere with your daily life are worth discussing with both your doctor and a digestive health specialist. Our gut health dietitians can help you track symptoms, identify potential triggers, and develop strategies to improve your digestive comfort while working with your medical team.
It’s frustrating when you’ve tried multiple approaches without success. Often, the issue isn’t finding the “right” supplement or diet, but taking a step back to address the fundamentals of digestive health. Our dietitians help you return to basics: proper hydration, adequate fiber from food sources, stress management, and regular eating patterns. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the most effective, but they need to be implemented consistently and in the right combination for your body.
